A dramatic entrance

2009

Daniel and I went to visit Baba, 3 years ago I think (2009?). She was at the first nursing home. Just as we walked through her door, a loud fire alarm suddenly ripped through the whole place. The timing was so perfectly bad, that Daniel and I thought we'd somehow set it off near her door or something. Had we accidentally leaned on a button as we walked in? We were hurriedly told to take Baba outside to the front assembly area, and do it quickly. Without hardly a “Hullo! How are you?” we helped Baba into her wheelchair. The alarm was too loud to talk and we could see people hurrying around everywhere and could hear all the scary, yelled instructions from the hall, so yes, it was frightening. On our march down the hall, people were going as fast as they could, which of course, wasn’t really fast at all for most. I don’t know about Daniel, but that actually calmed me down a bit – being forced to walk at snail’s pace. We were in a group, everything was going to be ok! That, and the fact we couldn’t see or even smell smoke. Eventually we made it outside and didn’t have to wait long before the fire engines turned up. Everyone herded outside just watched while the guys in their full yellow outfits calmly walked in and out of the doors. It was an anti-climax really – no hoses, no water, no nothing. In that quiet 15mins, we were finally able to have a chat to Baba. We were laughing about it now, but still a little shook up. When the party was over, we joked with her saying we timed it that well on purpose, just wanted to make a grand entrance, yknow, make sure she knew we’d really arrived. I remember she didn’t seem to think we were all that funny. Maybe she was annoyed to leave her comfy spot, but I know Daniel and I were both glad to be there with her during the excitement. Turns out that it was someone’s faulty electric shaver that had set off the alarm. It was a dramatic start to a very good visit though!
